Independence Associates has been a cornerstone of the independent living movement in Southeastern Massachusetts since 1980. Rooted in advocacy and lived experience, our organization continues to grow and lead in promoting the rights and independence of people with disabilities.

Our Roots in the Independent Living Movement

Independence Associates (IA) has a long-standing history of serving as both a direct care provider and a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. Established in 1980 as an Independent Living Center under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, IA has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve—both locally and beyond.

From our earliest days in a small corner office at the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) inside Lakeville State Hospital, IA has remained committed to the core principles of the independent living philosophy: self-determination, choice, and full community inclusion.

The Visionaries Who Sparked a Movement

In the early 1980s, pioneers like Eric Griffin and Paul Spooner recognized the transformative potential of an Independent Living Center in Southeastern Massachusetts. Over late-night conversations and shared meals, a bold vision took shape—one where people with disabilities could lead, guide, and drive change within their communities.

This grassroots passion became the foundation of IA’s mission. Thanks to the efforts of early advocates, IA transitioned from its modest beginnings into a full-sized office in Elmwood, East Bridgewater, becoming a strong and values-driven organization.

Milestones in Disability Advocacy

Since those formative years, Independence Associates has played a critical role in many defining moments in disability history. We’ve:

  • Advocated for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Hosted some of the earliest modems for DIMENET, the world’s first accessible internet database
  • Participated in national disability rights events and coalitions

Our organization is also one of the few Independent Living Centers with a dedicated Personal Care Management Department and a dynamic Youth Department, established in 2015, which continues to grow as a key part of our services.

Led By and For People with Disabilities

A majority of IA’s Board of Directors are individuals with disabilities, reflecting our founding principle: an organization by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. Our leadership understands firsthand the challenges and opportunities of living with a disability and ensures that our policies and priorities align with real-life needs.

Our staff reflects the community we serve, with many team members having lived experience with disability. This shared understanding fosters a culture of empathy, empowerment, and authentic support.

Coming Full Circle—And Looking Ahead

After relocating to Brockton, then Taunton, and back to Brockton again, IA has returned to its roots. Our current location at 100 Laurel Street in East Bridgewater, just minutes from our original Elmwood office, brings us back to where our journey began—both geographically and ideologically.

As we continue to expand our reach and deepen our impact, we remain guided by one essential question:
“Are we staying true to the Independent Living Philosophy?”

Every service we offer, every connection we build, and every goal we pursue is rooted in our mission:
To promote the right of people with disabilities to live independently in the community.

We invite you to stand with us as we shape a more inclusive future—together.
